8 Tips to Save Money On Energy Bills

  • 1) Turn off the lights when you’re not using them. This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how much energy you can save by simply flipping the switch when you leave a room.
  • 2) Unplug electronics when they’re not in use. Even when they’re turned off, electronics can still use energy if they’re plugged in. To save money, unplug your phone charger, toaster, and other electronics when you’re not using them. In the early years of our marriage when we were both making next to nothing in our jobs, I even unplugged things like the washer and dryer and even internet when we left the house. Now, I not as drastic as I used to be about these, but it did help us save when money was tight.
    • Side note: Put your appliances or lamps on Wifi outlets and schedule them. I have a lot of items scheduled in our house now and these are a huge lifesaver and gives me more peace of mind knowing I can control the usage in our home more.

  • 3) Use energy-efficient light bulbs. Energy-efficient light bulbs use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs, so you’ll save money on both your energy bill and your light bulb budget.
  • 4) Install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow you to set different temperatures for different times of the day, so you’re not heating or cooling your home when you’re not there. Ecobee is a great option if you are looking to upgrade – and its not that difficult to install either! 30 minutes and you’re done!
    • Side Note: Adjust your thermostat during the night or when you’re away at work and drop it a few degrees. This can help you save upwards of 10% on your bill!

  • 5) Insulate your home. Proper insulation can help keep the heat in during the winter and the cool air in during the summer, which can save you a significant amount on your energy bills. This is obviously the biggest one. It can be more expensive yes, but it can definitely help save you money on those monthly bills and help you stay a little more comfortable in your home.
  • 6) Seal up drafts. Check around your doors and windows for drafts and use weatherstripping or caulk to seal them up. This will help keep the heat in and the cold out, saving you money on your energy bills. You can also use those plastic window sheets in the winter (the ones where you use a hair dryer on) to help stop drafts. These work incredibly well!
